Installation of ClearOS

After starting the install, you will be presented with a simple and short set of questions. The wizard takes you through the configuration options that are required to install ClearOS onto a hard disk or virtual drive. Once the questions are completed, your installation will finish in only a few minutes.

Getting Around

To navigate the ClearOS installation wizard, you can use a mouse or use the following keys on your keyboard:

  • - navigates between fields
  • - navigates within elements of a field
  • - selects the current highlighted item

Selected Buttons As you use the TAB key to move around, look for the dotted lines around the inner border of the button or object. You can also use a pointer/mouse if you have one installed, but it is not required.

Install Screens

The following sections provide a step-by-step guide to the wizard screens that appear in the installer. Most installs are pretty basic, but options are given here to allow the administrator to do some highly customized solutions.

Language and Keyboard

The first item that needs to be done is selecting your language and keyboard. Please be careful on this step since selecting an unfamiliar language can lead to some confusion. These settings are only relevant to the install process and the command line after your install. The Webconfig interface uses its own language options and is based on the browser.

Configuration

From here you can select various options about how your ClearOS system is installed. Other than the disk and the password for 'root', most options will have some default values which you can accept. Some options, like the date and time, are easily configured elsewhere in the installation process. You can configure them now or later if you like.

Date and Time (optional)

This option is required in the Webconfig wizard later. You can fill things out here but the configuration of the Network Time will happen later. You can set your time zone here or wait until later. Click 'Done' at the top when you are finished.

Installation Source (optional)

By default, the installation will use the media that got you this far as an installation source. This is typically sufficient and you shouldn't have to do anything here unless you are a developer or are hacking around.

Some cases where you might change this media are that you can have the ClearOS installer use a different installation source if you wanted to install something a little different. For example, you can point to a testing branch of ClearOS, or your own repository.

Software Selection (optional)

There shouldn't be anything for you to do here in regards to ClearOS. The ClearOS install is a minimal install which will get you to the marketplace. The marketplace is a more efficient method for delivering apps and services so be sure to add apps later to get your ClearOS system to work for you the way you want.

Installation Destination

By far, this is the most important subsection and it is required.

https://clearos.com/dokuwiki2/lib/exe/fetch.php?w=550&tok=77f843&media=content:en_us:7_install_installation_destination1.png

At a minimum, you will need to select a disk where you will install ClearOS. The possibilities of how this can be done are numerous. If you want to perform a custom layout of ClearOS, please refer to the Configuring Partitions and RAID guide. If you just have one disk and are satisfied installing ClearOS using the defaults, select that disk and choose 'Done'.

If there are previous partitions on that disk and there is no space left, you will be prompted to 'Reclaim space' for the installation of ClearOS.

If there are partitions previously on the disk, you will need to delete some, if not all of them to do a fresh install of ClearOS. To delete all of them, hit the 'Delete all' button. Then hit the 'Reclaim space' button.

Network and Hostname

You can set some of your network interfaces now. By default, your first network interface card will be configured with DHCP. You can configure your interfaces later as well.

Hostname and Networking

Now it is time to select a hostname. If you plan on deploying ClearOS with a direct Internet connection, we recommend using the real Internet hostname, e.g. server.example.com. If you plan on deploying ClearOS on a local network, you can use an internal hostname instead, e.g. server.example.local.

You may be tempted to hit at this time. Though you certainly can do so, we recommend configuring the network after booting the system for the first time. By default, the first network card will attempt to use DHCP if the configuration is unchanged.

Begin Installation

You will know that you are ready to start the installation when all the of the exclamation marks! have disappeared. Press the to start the installation.

Root Password

Provide a good password to use for the root account. If the installer detects a weak password, please follow the recommendation to select a better password.

Your ClearOS password must follow these rules:

  • Must start with a letter or number
  • Must not contain the following characters: | ; *

Reboot

Once the hard disk partitioning is complete, the ClearOS installer will begin the installation process. This will take a few minutes to complete and you will see a confirmation to reboot when completed. After the reboot, you are on to the next part of the installation process: the Network Console.
