Howto fix Network Problems

There are a numbers of “How-To” items on this site regarding the installation of various applications - but nothing that specifically deals with How-To Resolve Problems.

To that end, as a small initial beginning, a basic list has been put together of Network Problem Trouble Shooting Questions that hopefully will help a person determine where their problem is, and if they cannot resolve it, at least provide some pointers as to the type of pertinent information that should be put into a forum append, once they have established the nature and area of their problem.

These questions have been garnered from the old CC Forums and credit should go to the original authors…

1. What is the network layout?

2. Did you install in standalone mode or gateway mode?

3. What version of CC/ClearOS are you using?

5. Can you ping www.clearfoundation.com from the ClearOS console/CLI? (Did the address resolve?)

13. What is the result of “cat /etc/resolv.conf” on ClearOS box?

14. What is the result of “route” or “route PRINT” on the client behind the ClearOS box? * (Looking for the correct gateway here)

15. Are the network lights on the ClearOS box/Clients/Switches etc on/blinking for each interface in use?

16. Are the correct cables being used? Have you tested them?

17. What is the result of “traceroute 8.8.8.8” from the ClearOS box

18. What is the result of “traceroute 8.8.8.8”/“tracert 8.8.8.8” from the client *

19. Are the firewalls on both ClearOS and the Clients setup correctly?

20. Does “/sbin/lspci” list all your NICs correctly on the ClearOS box?

21. What type of Internet connection? Wireless? Cable? ADSL? Bridge or NAT mode?
