....I had a Dell raid card in my system, but when it didn't work first time I took it out, so now I'm running two disks on the on-board IDE. The server just does proxy work - so its not like the data is mission critical. One day I might have a go at getting it to work, but I think I'll probably upgrade to a new box at some point in the future.

Well here is the setup that i decided to go with in the end
so cant help you with the partitions i'm afraid as i'm a noob myself and still learning
The raid controller is working fine by the way

I have a 250GB as the Main drive
and have VMware installed with an XP image and a Freenas image

I have the 1tb raid ext3 formatted and mounted as /nasshare (had to use a mandrake live cd to partition and format as webmin seemed not to format the drive properly).
for some reason trying to format through webmin or SSH just gave me errors.

i tried using raw disk acess through vmware but thiis caused problems so i have created a 950gb virtual drive and am using freenas to format the virtual drive and created a share.

so far copying etc works fine and performance is acceptable but as i have the card plugged into a PCI socket and not a PCI-X i dont expect blistering speeds.

The only thing i would wish for is to be able to monitor the raid through the clearos hardware raid page but i will have to check on that more.

that sounds like the way i am moving too..
currently have a pair of 80 gig
    and 4x500gig drives...

how would your recommend partitioning things up..so that data like flexshares/ftp and user data is on the raid 5(4x500gig drives)
boot and config stuff on the 2x80gig w/software raid 1

currently reading up on lvm stuff..
    will keep playing here

    thanks

    Hi
Not sure if this will help

i have the same Dell Cerc Controller and it works fine in ClearOS

I have 6 250GB drives installed as a Raid 5 with 1 Hot Spare and ClearOS finds it no problem, Although it cannot monitor it

I did find that when i installed Clear that the default partitioning made the adaptec card the boot but could not boot from it but i just left it out and mounted it later

I am going to try and use 9 250GB sata drives (6 on the adaptec card as JBOD and 3 on the Motherboard as Jbod configured as Software Raid 6 this weekend so that should be fun)

have you got the Latest firmware on it ? i think it's .7419 from the dell site (i got it from the downloads of a Powervault 745N as that's where the card is from

Also how have you got it setup as your post above looks like clear has an issue with the Raid volume but my install just sees it as another (big) drive

If there is anything you need me to test then please ask

    thanks
