Hi all
My home network have 4 users using 5 laptops and 2 smartphones.
A computer shop in my area is selling some pretty cheap desktops :P (with no monitor) that I consider buying to use as a dedicated home server. One particular set has the following specs:
- Intel® Atom D425 1.80GHz
- Intel® NM10 Chipset
- Integrated Intel HD Graphics
- SDRAM DDR2 2GB
- HDD SATA 250GB
- LAN 10/100 Mbps
My requirements are:
+ Compulsory:
- file server
- print server
- backup *
- bittorrent
+ Optional:
- plesk
- owncloud *
- zarafa
Can you guys advise me whether the abovementioned set cuts it?
Thank you so much!
* By the way, I'd like to ask if Owncloud already includes the function of BackupPC, meaning if Owncloud backups snapshot versions of my files so that I can restore the files to any previous version?

Thanks Nick. I'm not concerned about storage though as I have 3 external HDDs.
I also do not plan to use any gateway/filter function so I guess 2GB is fine. In fact, I've just tried out my friend's netbook with only 1GB and Intel Atom 1core 1.66Ghz. I was surprised that it could run Win 7 pretty nice making me wonder whether we've gone too far with the high spec race.
I hope the USB installation is simple as we get so accustomed to the easy process in most Linux desktop distros. -

You will need to assess your storage requirements but I'd make sure there was enough space for another disk.
I would prefer 4GB+ RAM. It does run with 2GB but I keep wanting ClearOS to do more (as a gateway) and it always seems to increase its RAM consumption.
If you are going to use it as a gateway/router you'll need another NIC and I'd suggest a 10/100/1000 NIC, keeping the on-board one for the WAN.
Don't bother with a CD/DVD but you'll need to search the forum for a USB installation.
