When I'm trying to access a clients servers webconfig in port 81 it takes me straight to the root of their html folder index.html

however if I ssh tunnel the port it works perfectly fine. Which was a relief as I was worried clearos broke! I'm guessing this is an issue with not being able to resolve externally but where would I go to configure this and change it so it works again?

    Tim,
I have checked using IP address and it's still the same thing I get the welcome to clearos page.

It's really weird I'll have to check if it works internally next week it might only let itself see the webconfig now.

Hmm I've not seen than before but the httpd config should redirect all port 81 traffic to the right place
    /usr/clearos/sandbox/etc/httpd/conf.d/framework.conf

Have you tried accessing their site externally by IP address instead of hostname? perhaps for some reason it is not matching the _default_:81 virtualhost definition

EDIT: Is the server the gateway? or behind another NAT or firewall device
