I am not sure if this is related to your issue but see this POST.
The slow UI might be because of the same issue I'm encountering, if that's the case we still need to wait for awhile.

Thanks for the reply on this I do not think your post is related to this issue I am not using Xen on my system. This is a straight forward firewall box. There is no virtual system running. I do remeber Peter saying some time ago that the beta1 release has problems with the ssl which in turn causes the console web interface and the https connect to run very slow. Is there a patch out there that can be applied to the system to speed up the system?

where "clearos.mydomain.org" is the exact name, including domain, of your machine.

I had to do 2 things

1) I Did modify the etc/hosts file as you suggested
2) I ran the suggestion that Peter has suggested in your post I ran a yum install sudo. I then restarted the Firewall. After the restart the system started working great

I don't have the problems that are reported at the beginning of this thread, but I do like to report that I think waiting 5 to 10 seconds before I get a response from my ClearOS box in the web interface, that is practically standing next to me, is slow.
It's faster to browse on the Internet then on my local ClearOS box web configuration.

Can someone explain to me why the response, when browsing my server with for example WinSCP, is practically direct but when I use the web interface it takes up to 10 seconds before a page is loaded ... ?!?

This is not a ClearOS 5.1 issue, but has been the case since I started using CC 3.x.
Would it make any difference for me to make the changes mentioned in the host file?
Or am I asking a stupid question ... ?!?

The change is a logical one, and can't hurt.

And even so, if it doesn't improve things for you, you can always revert your change...

Can it be true that, not just browsing the ClearOS web interface improves, but browsing the Internet in general ... ?!?
It's not that it pops up as soon as I click it, but the pages seem to load faster.
I don't understand why this happens, but it works and I implemented it on all my clients.
Can you please explain in layman's terms, why this change is a logical one ... ?!?

Does it mean that when someone who does not have a ClearOS gateway, but a router/modem with the local ip address of "192.168.1.1", that they can improve browsing the Internet by the folllowing change... ?!?

#127.0.0.1 localhost

127.0.0.1 192.168.1.1 localhost

Or is it purely a "Red Hat" issue ... ?!?

And what about if the local ip address of the ClearOS box is "192.168.100.101" ... ?!?

#127.0.0.1 localhost

Or does it have to be the Hostname ... ?!?

I also noticed that on one of my pc's my anti-virus client had made some changes in my "hosts" file.

It looked like this before I removed the line:

127.0.0.1 localhost

127.0.0.1 www.<antivirus>.com localhost

Was this an intrusion of my security or privacy ... ?!?

IMHO - more like the machine was infected/compromised etc as that change would have prevented the machine from reaching "www.<antivirus>.com". It is a technique to block access to sites, and typically used to block access to anti-virus updates etc. Hence the infection protects itself so it cannot be discovered by an ant-virus update from your anti-virus supplier...

I managed to restore an image that I made right after I clean installed and configured that system, so that should have fixed that problem.
What about my other questions ... any answers to them ... ?!?
I tried to find answers with wikipedia and google, but none of them are in layman's terms.

Maybe it only looks like browsing the web interface is faster, at least in some cases, because in other cases it still takes the 10 seconds that I reported earlier, what still makes no sense to me, because it's to a local source.
Also, some of my bookmarks that I visit daily, needed to be reloaded once before they showed.

Is it even possible to browse the web interface with the same speed as for example, browsing with WinSCP, CUPS or like Windows Explorer to a shared folder ... ?!?
If I'd had to wait 10 seconds for my screen to refresh while playing an on-line game it would be ridiculous ... and that's not even local ...

You'll have to ask Steven Pryer. That being said, I've not noticed problems with the UI speed for my boxes. But it could be a perception issue.

I have noticed that sometimes I have to wait over 40 seconds after making a change in the firewall web interface ...
I get an almost instant response when browsing the web interface of my game servers and CUPS, so I suppose that it's solvable.

I asked Steven Pryer and this is what he told me:

The videos have been edited for the purpose of focusing on the learning process, so that you don't have to wait when trying to learn something from them.

He also told me that sometimes having to wait 40 seconds is quiet normal when using a low budget ClearOS system like I currently do ... :blush:

So for now all that remains, is to hope that a "major league" hardware update will improve the performance of my ClearOS box.
