I can connect to OpenVPN with no errors, but after a couple of minutes, the connection drops - again no error shown in /var/log/messages. Then the OpenVPN prompt asks me to login again after about 5 minutes.
The only error I have found is this in /var/log/secure:
gateway openvpn: pam_unix(openvpn:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost= user=jthomann
I am on OpenVPN 2.4.6
EDIT: I guess the issue was that I couldn't be logged into the VPN on more than one pc.

Yes that would cause frequent disconnects and a warning in the connection logs. It is possible to get round it with an extra parameter in the /etc/openvpn/clients.conf but is not generally recommended and will give problems if you ever use it use it with a mobile device such a as a cell phone when on the move. You will keep getting a new IP address from OpenVPN and if you have open documents you will end up with file locks as the server thinks they have been opened by a different device.
