Installation Wizard

After starting the install, you will be presented with a simple and short installation wizard. The wizard takes you through the configuration options that are required to install ClearOS on to a hard disk or virtual drive. Once the wizard is completed, your installation will finish in only a few minutes.

Getting Around

To navigate the ClearOS installation wizard, you can use the following keys:

  • - navigates between fields
  • - navigates within elements of a field
  • - selects the current highlighted item

ClearOS Installer - Hotkeys For those of you who prefer keyboard shortcuts, many of the buttons and fields on the screen also have hotkeys. In the adjacent screenshot, you can see a small underline under the letter P in the Root Password field, the letter N on the Next button, etc. You can use the hotkeys to navigate and take action. For example, hitting Alt-N would perform the button action to take you to the next step in the wizard. You can also use a pointer/mouse if you have one installed, but it is not required.

Wizard Screens

The following sections provide a step-by-step guide to the wizard screens that appear in the installer.

Language and Keyboard

The first item that needs to be done is selecting your language and keyboard. Please be careful on this step since selecting an unfamiliar language can lead to some confusion.

Storage Devices

ClearOS supports many advanced storage options: iSCSI, Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and more. In most cases, selecting the Basic Storage Device option is appropriate.

Install / Upgrade

If you are installing ClearOS Professional for the first time, select the Fresh Installation option. You can also select to upgrade an existing ClearOS 6 installation from this screen. If you are upgrading, this will be the final step in the installation wizard.

Hostname and Networking

Now it is time to select a hostname. If you plan on deploying ClearOS with a direct Internet connection, we recommend using the real Internet hostname, e.g. server.example.com. If you plan on deploying ClearOS on a local network, you can use an internal hostname instead, e.g. server.example.local.

You may be tempted to hit the at this time. Though you certainly can do so, we recommend configuring the network after booting the system for the first time. By default, the first network card will attempt to use DHCP if the configuration is unchanged.

Time Zone

Selecting the right time zone is important. An invalid time zone can break authentication systems and cause strange behavior with VoIP and other bits of technology. You can click on the map or use the drop-down list to select your time zone.

Root Password

Provide a good password to use for the root account. If the installer detects a weak password, please follow the recommendation to select a better password.

Hard Disk Partitioning

ClearOS Installer - PartitioningPartitioning can be the trickiest part of the installation process. In fact, there is a whole section of the User Guide dedicated to this topic and RAID. Here are some suggestions to help guide the way.

Use All Space – Select this option if you do not require software RAID nor have a need for a large data partition. This option also assumes that ClearOS is not sharing the hard disk with other operating systems.

Replace Existing Linux System – Similar to Use All Space, but this option preserves non-Linux partitions.

Shrink Current System and Use Free Space – Since ClearOS is usually the only operating system on the target system, these two options are rarely used.

Create Custom Layout – If you use software RAID, have a need for a dedicated data share, have multiple disks installed, then please read Configuring Partitions and RAID for more information.

Encrypt System

ClearOS supports encrypting the filesystem. If your ClearOS system is not in a secure location and you are concerned about protecting the data in the scenario where the ClearOS system is physically stolen, then you may want to consider this option. Please keep in mind, encrypting the filesystem also means that a decryption password is required on every reboot! In other words, unattended reboots and headless operations are not supported.

Review and Modify Layout

If you would like to review the default partition layout, please select the review and modify partition layout option before proceeding to the next step.

Please be careful! The contents of all your hard disks on the target computer can be completely erased. This may include any attached hard drives like USB and external SATA!

Reboot

Once the hard disk partitioning is complete, the ClearOS installer will begin the installation process. This will take a few minutes to complete and you will see a confirmation to reboot when completed. After the reboot, you are on to the next part of the installation process: the Network Console.
