I have recently started using clearos7 (& just upgraded to home essentials edition) and have run into a couple of problems with applications / OS being able to access the internet.
ClearOS is set up as a non-transparent gateway and is physically connected between the modem & wifi access point. It is mostly working well except for:
- Bitdefender (2017) updates don't work. Neither does new install of Bitdefender (says there is no internet)
- Windows Smart Screen (on Windows 10 Home when installing a new app) can't access the internet. No particularly concerned about that but it shows that the problem is not limited to Bitdefender.
The problem doesn't appear to be the content filter blacklists as the problem persists even when I unselect all blacklist categories. I have put bitdefender.net, bitdefender.com, bitdefender.com.au in the "exception sites" list as well. I've had contact with Bitdefender support but so far they haven't been very helpful. It is only a problem when connecting to the internet via the gateway so the problem lies somewhere in my clearos setup. There are no unexpected problems accessing websites with a browser.
Any ideas? I'm assuming that both problems have a common cause.

Thanks for the replies Nick. I had already gone through the process referred to in doing proxy settings in Bitdefender except that I didn't click on the button to turn proxy settings on! Now working.
I've also added urs.microsoft.com to exception URL's & windows smart screen now works as well.
Can top level domains be added to the exception list or does it require the complete URL? Given that the default install has update.microsoft.com and download.microsoft.com it would appear that the complete URL is required. A pity; it would be easier to just add microsoft.com! Requiring the complete URL would make it virtually impossible to use a whitelist and allow access to google drive (which requires dozens of google.com and e100.net URLs to work and no readily accessible list of what they all are!). I've tried it at my school which uses an OSX server to implement the whitelist filtering. So difficult that I removed most of the computers from the whitelist filtering. (Looking at changing to ClearOS using blacklist filtering instead.) -
