hi im using intel p3-650mhz (fsb 100) and 512mb ram, harddisk 80gb 7200 rpm, clearos 5.2. i just have 6 users so i think the specs enough for me. installation chosen: dhcp server, web proxy, bandwidth management. but i have some problems:
if i enable all services (except protocol filter), my pc halt in less than 1 hour.
then i disable user auth, user database ldap, user database sync.
with that condition, my pc can stand about few days then halt again when cron rotating logs.
then i disable logging service, system database, system scheduler, system watch.
my pc works fine with that condition til now (11 days).
in this case, running services only dhcp/dns, ntp, web proxy, gateway services, ssh.
but im just worried:
1. how if squid error n down? can it restart itself? or need any service enabled?
2. if i disable cron n syswatch, any problem can occur? coz im just using clearos for web proxy n simple gateway service.
3. can u guys tell me what services that MUST enabled for system stability? (just for simple gateway service)
thanks :D

Problem solved. I disabling squid access.log and store.log, then everything working properly. I guess the CPU cant handle so huge squid logs lolz.

    "p3-650mhz (fsb 100) and 512mb ram"

It could be really on your hardware per se already.

We have experienced almost the same scenario used P4 with 512mb ram and doing on/off most of the time for the services but recurring with the same problem.

What we did was to just replace the memory with the same specfications and problem solved.

You could give it a try.

maybe post the squid.log to a pastebin like service and share the link here.

well i've monitored system activity with Top. when started to rotate, system idle 0%, wait going so high then whole system freeze before rotate ended. how can i tell if rotate not ended yet? coz i saw at log folder, every system rotated but squid log not done yet. i think maybe the problem coming from too high squid log. i tried to disable squid log but squid become error. everytime i make it up, in less than 10 secs its going down again.
i think to build new pc for clearos, but i dont know which is more important for clearos between bogomips, system architecture (low latency processor), or high memory. if i just need higher memory then i dont have to use high speed processor. if i just need high bogomips then i think intel atom D525 must be very high bogomips. if i need low latency processor then i must spend alot of money for it T___T. any information?
    thanks guys :D

Is there not an issue with some services and low powered hardware where sometimes a cron job does not finish before the next one fires? It may be IDS or IPS but I can't remember. It may be a coincidence that it is when logrotate is running just because this adds more load at a time when the other cron job is running, tipping it over the edge.

Sounds like you have a hardware / heat issue if it is more frequent with more load?

Cron and syswatch perform vital routine checkups and "house cleaning" tasks...I wouldn't leave them off for any length of time

For a simple gateway service i'd suggest you need everything that's setup when installed!

If it were me, i'd want to find out why it was so unstable? When it halts, is it just network activity? or the whole machine freezes requiring a hard reset?
